  NEW IN 2013
Due to many requests from artist friends and others who wish to be part of this artistic endeavor, Charlotte Wharton Studio will be organizing an artist retreat at Montecastello di Vibro. The retreat will run concurrently with the workshop, but there will be no instruction or critque offered by Charlotte. Attendees to the retreat are free to engage in their particular artistic activities on their own schedule, but will also receive all of the benefits listed below under THE WORKSHOP and COST AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE. Side trips may be scheduled individually or in groups or retreat attendees may join the workshop attendees in their painting side trips.

The artist retreat can be attended by anyone who has an interest in art, which could include sculptors, writers, photographers, etc., as well as more established painters who do not need instruction, but wish to have a private room with studio, three meals a day, interaction with other artists, and the glorious subject matter of Umbria, Italy.

Also, the length of stay has been extended by one day. Previous attendees have requested a little longer stay that would allow for additional side trips for painting.

  THE LOCATION
Montecastello di Vibio is an enchanting hill town in central Italy, overlooking the lush Tiber River valley. The location is halfway between Rome and Florence and provides artists and students the opportunity to see firsthand some of the Western world's greatest art. A beautifully preserved medieval fortress town, Montecastello looks much like it did 500 years ago. Fortification walls and remnants of towers surround the tiny heart-shaped village of stone houses and passageways. Vast panoramas of breathtaking landscapes can be seen in every direction.

Montecastello is safe and friendly, and a wonderful place to paint. It is not a tourist town, and the people in the community are very supportive of the artists. This delightful village has been the home of the International School for more than 20 years, and a complex of historic buildings houses all of the School’s facilities.

The surrounding countryside is patterned with vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields, and etched with rows of cypresses and umbrella pines. Preserving over 2,000 years of history, the cities and hill towns of Umbria and nearby Tuscany are landmarks of European culture. Many were built over four eras—Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance. In this environment, you will paint under the same light that spawned some of the world’s greatest art. Here is the architecture and landscape that inspired Renaissance artists like Giotto, Raphael, and Piero della Francesca, and later masters like Rubens, Poussin, Ingres, and Corot.

THE WORKSHOP

Nationally known painter and instructor Charlotte Wharton will help participants interpret the rhythms of nature and further their own voice. Charlotte will include and go beyond the standard elements of design to cover the interpretation of the inherent energy of linear directives, shape, value, color, using the Language of Artistic Energy and the Munsell Color System. Artists of all levels working in oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels will gain inspiration from the breathtaking views and extraordinary light quality. Plein air painting classes will be held in the morning. Afternoons will be devoted to working independently. Individual and group critiques will be offered.

Attendees will be picked up at the Fiumicino Airport in Rome and will arrive in Montecastello on Saturday, June 1st and will spend the day settling in and touring the facility and town. After an early breakfast on Sunday, the workshop will begin and continue through Friday, June 7th. Saturday will be the final day and will be flexible for group critiques, goodbyes, and travel (delivered to the airport). Side trips during the week may be scheduled at the option of the attendees.   CHARLOTTE WHARTON, COPLEY MASTER, PSA

Many magazines have described Charlotte’s manner of painting, but none more poignantly than the Worcester Quarterly’s 2006 article Souls On Canvas: Portraits By Charlotte Wharton Get Beyond Likeness, “… Her gift of versatility ranges from sought after loosely rendered private portraits to dignified corporate portraits befitting the boardroom ...”.

Charlotte Wharton, PSA, Copley Master, is also well known for her loose calligraphy executed in her genre paintings and landscapes. Her portraits and non-commissioned works hang in many national and European private and corporate collections. Ms. Wharton has a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts from Clark University, summa cum laude. She has received advanced studies with the country’s leading portraitists, Aaron Shikler and Everett Raymond Kinstler. Her work has garnered over five dozen awards including The Copley Society of Boston’s Gold Medal Award For Excellence In Portraiture and the Oil Painters of America’s Award For Excellence In Painting in 2004. Selected works have been reproduced in three Rockport Press Art Books: Portrait Inspirations (also on the cover), The Best Of Oil Painting, and The Best Of Pastel in 1997 and highlighted in the Artists Magazine. She has been featured many times on WGMC-TV. Charlotte was awarded a summer’s study in Dinan, Brittany, France by L’Association les amis de la Grande Vigne in 1996.
